Microsoft announced today the start of Surface Computing. What is it? Basically it is a huge multi-touch display which opens up a range of possibilities for human computer interaction. A review of this technology by Popular Mechanics is shown below.
Of course Microsoft is not the only organization developing such products, Jef Han, a researcher from New York University already introduced such a device at the TED conference in 2006. The vidoe of this show can be found here.
Now what is different from Jeff Han’s Demo and Microsoft’s Surface Computing intiative? Microsoft will be shipping these displays by the end of the year to commercial customers. Robert Scoble has found out even more details:
- Price between 5000 and 10.000 USD
- Microsoft will not solely develop applications – the plattform will be open for developers
- The first installations at customers can be seen by the end of the year
So what does this have to do with marketing? Just imagine all the new possibilities for showing and explaining products and services in your business environment. A great collection of applications of this technology can be found in this article of the Seattle Post. Check out the video about using the technology in a T-mobile store.
I can’t wait to see these display in stores creating a remarkable shopping experience for customers. Let’s make a prediction here: The first mobile phone store in continental Europe (let’s say Germany) to use these displays will be confronted with a nice, long queue in the first weeks after the installation.
