One one hand, products and services became commoditised, and companies are now competing solely on price; one the other hand, consumers, more than ever before are engaged to products and services on an emotional level. The conjunction of both trends reinforces the fact that companies need to innovate by providing consumers with engaging experiences. 

Hence the extraordinary growth of practices such as service design in the past years.
